Dvar sheker?

I recently heard a rabbi mention a “family minhag” of finding out the sex of a baby in utero and then lying about knowing that information. I’m curious about your reactions to such a practice both on a halachic and hashkafic basis.

My only reaction is “midevar sheqer tirchaq”. People so often play fast and loose with the truth, whether changing embarrassing details, or even ones that would take long explanation, rather than just omitting them. Exaggeration when guzma isn’t obvious. Etc.. The last thing we need is a common “custom” of normalizing speaking falsehood.

Okay, not literally “the last thing we need”. (Humor by going meta through self-reference intended.)
